Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Similar to Campylobacter, the bacteria E. coli is often naturally present in birds and they do not often show signs of illness, but could still make you sick! Don't worry though, the type of E. coli that typically makes you sick from undercooked hamburger meat (O157:H7), is not found in poultry.

  • Individuals under 5 and over 65 are at the highest risk

    • Those with a weakened immune system are also at high risk

  • Best prevention- wash hands frequently!
