SALMONELLA

Infection with the bacteria Salmonella is called salmonellosis. Signs of human infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.   

 

High risk individuals who should limit contact with poultry: 

  • Children, especially under 5 years old

    • Ideally children under 5 should not handle birds or equipment used to care for birds​

  • Adults 65 and older 

  • Immunocompromised individuals 

Prevention:

  • Wash hands! ​

    • Wash after any interaction with birds, where they live, or after gathering eggs 

    • Try to not touch face or mouth when working with birds until hands are washed

  • Follow the rules of egg safety. Click link below for more details 

  • Use designated shoes and tools in areas where birds are kept, thoroughly clean them and keep them outside

  • Do NOT:

    • Bring birds inside the home, especially near areas with food

    • Eat or drink near where birds are kept 

    • Snuggle or kiss birds
